Artist Statement
My work is an exploration in texture and color. Drawing from my background in the apparel and technology industries, I work in plaster with a childlike curiosity, never knowing what shape the plaster will take. When the shape and structure emerge, I apply color with an airbrush giving life and character to the textures I have created.
About the Artist
My favorite memories of my childhood are the times I could be found with a hammer, nails and scrap pieces of wood. I found tremendous joy in creating something from recycled fragments.
Although my projects have become more complex and are no longer made of scraps, the joy and fun experienced then continues to this very day.da
y and provides the same childlike excitement.
My foray into the workforce was in the apparel industry. It was there along with my training at The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, that I found myself drawn to creating designs that incorporated innovative blends of color incorporated with unique and novel textures.
It was some years later that while working at Marvel Entertainment, I was mesmerized watching comic books and consumer packaging come to life utilizing various airbrush techniques. That fascination inspired my own journey into airbrush painting, resulting in a few pieces that I could frame and hang in my home. However, I missed the incorporation of texture. After 20 plus years in the apparel field, I was lured into the world of technology. While solving client’s challenges required creativity, it is a completely different type of creative expression. I missed expressing my vision of color and texture.
After experimenting with various mediums in an effort to find the perfect vehicle to express that combination, I discovered plaster in a most peculiar way. While rollerblading, I fell breaking my wrist! While watching the plaster being applied to my wrist, the answer to my creative quandary was suddenly very apparent.
I started using plaster and incorporating unconventional methods to bring textures that could be incorporated into wall art as well as furniture. My art continues to be a source of that childlike joy and excitement, as it is ever-challenging and limited only by my creativity, and due the nature of the medium, there are times when it reacts in ways not anticipated, taking me on a journey deep into creativity.
